Dr. Nelson first completed a Doctor of Pharmacy degree ranking at the top of his class at Idaho State University. He always knew that he wanted to be a physician and used the degree to springboard into medicine by entering the University of Washington through the Idaho WWAMI program. He served his first year of medical school at Moscow/Pullman and would often visit Spokane. This is where he fell in love with the city and region. He then completed his medical school education at the University of Washington in Seattle graduating with High Honors and in the Alpha Omega Alpha society which is a distinction held only for the top 10% of the medical school class.

After UW he entered residency at one of the most prestigious urology programs in the nation Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville Tennessee. Over the next five years, he had extensive training with some of the best urologists in the world and pioneers of the field and honed his skill and passion for the treatment of all urologic conditions especially urologic cancers and robotic/minimally invasive surgery. He received several awards during residency including best resident teacher as well as publishing and presenting over 20 studies relating to various urologic diseases.

After residency, Dr. Nelson knew that he wanted to be in Spokane permanently and returned in 2006 to join Rockwood Urology. For the next 16 years, he would bring his training to bear in the inland Northwest taking care of tens of thousands of patients. He served that entire time as the section head for the department of urology and chairman of the Rockwood robotics committee. He has been interviewed in a number of regional magazines, been the speaker at a number of regional health care conferences, and has been on multiple local TV shows in his fervent effort to take better care of the Spokane region’s urologic needs. He now joins Spokane Urology and is excited to bring that same passion for quality patient care for many more years to come in the inland Northwest.

Dr. Nelson is extremely adept with the DaVinci robotics platform having completed over 2000 robotic surgeries in his career. He offers the region’s highest level of expertise with nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy, robotic simple prostatectomy, adrenalectomy, partial and radical nephrectomy, nephro-ureterectomy, female prolapse, and a host of other disease states.

Dr. Nelson believes that all patients should be empowered and able to fully understand their urologic condition and he endeavors to explain this thoroughly to patients in terms that they are able to understand. He is well known for his easy-going, down-to-earth manner.

When Dr. Nelson is not passionately caring for his patients he enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs. He is an avid skier and golfer and enjoys spending time in the beautiful outdoors.
